Heavenly Himmelis!

If you're getting married, or just looking for a really on trend accessory to add to your house then a Himmeli is definitely great start!

These absolute beauties were an easy favorite of mine.

BUUUT my eyes grew to the size of china plates when I saw the cost of one, let alone the cost of hiring one. So I did what any bride on a mission did - I pinterested. And if I do say so myself - they came out pretty good and you won't believe what they are made of!

- Straws, some good old glue, and fishing wire . And yes as you can see they can hold some greenery in them just fine.

I made a total of 24 all together and had them scattered all over my venue.

Yes, straws- plastic straws!!

Not too shabby ey?

Here is what you need:

1) Depending on how many you're making you'll need a couple of bags of non-flexible plastic straws like the ones in the picture. You can find these at any party store. I got mine from the Crazy store .

You need to keep in mind how big you want your designs - the bigger the himmeli the longer the straws needed.

So the straws I had were 60cm long .

2) Fishing wire- Try find some that can take some weight . You'll be able to see on the spool how strong the wire is. The stronger it is the more weight it'll be able to take . I used a 1kg which is normal fishing wire and it was able to hold a lot of greenery.

3) A Glue Gun and some glue sticks

4) Scissors and your ruler!

5) Rust-oleum Spray paint. One in the Primer and the other in your metallic colour . I chose rose gold. You need the primer to make sure the colour doesn't chip off the plastic easily .

Now you are ready to begin - EEEEEK. These honestly took me 2-3 hours max to make and made a huge change to my overall look on the day.

These are way easier to make then what it looks like. I followed the tutorial I've linked below. And each of my himmelis turned out perfectly.

The only changes I made were to my measurements which I tripled as the ones in the tutorial were a little too small in comparison to the ones that I was making.

The measurements I used were -

The Base: 25 cm Length ( You should have 8 straws in this size)

The Tiers : 50cm Lengths (You should have 4 straws in this size)

I also had to make sure that the fishing wire didn't cut through the plastic straws. So just a tip. Make sure to make them tight and knot them!!

After you've made your basic himmeli shape it's time to start giving them more of a 'welded' together feel and less of a plastic straw look. So I made a cult - KIDDING . The photo just looks like I did. But I glue gunned each of the joins. This also gives the Himmeli extra strength. And helps against any tearing.

As you can see my lovely little cult of Himmelis sacrificing my glue gun! - lol

I also played with a few other shapes. Because these are geometric shapes you really have a lot of freedom when it comes to the form of the Himmeli. That comes from the dimensions you choose.

The final stage is important. Its the primer phase. Now the Rust-oleum brand is fantastic for sticking to plastic! I've played with so many sprays in the past and trust me when I say they are my go to choice . So before hand I did test with another brand and it chipped off instantly. So priming them first and then coating with a metallic coat really made a difference .

You can also see in the photo how the glue gun effect actually makes it look like its been welded. Trust me we got so many gasps when we told people that they were actually just some party straws and fishing wire.

That said there was still some chipping on the day so you do need to be careful. But the chipping was from me being really rough with them. So I would say to just be mindful when handling them.

Overall, these were a fantastic addition to my overall decor and saved us a ton on our budget and were a lot of fun to make in the process ! And now I have some really beautiful pieces which I cannot wait to hang in my home !

I hope you loved our little guide and that you love your designs just as much as I loved mine!

As promised check out how to construct the Himmeli below !
