Lit Wood logs

The time is now, your wedding is around the corner, and you are pinteresting like mad- I see you , I feel you , I tots was you , and gurl I got you!

Even if it isn't your wedding , these little candle log are stunning little decor accessories that have such versatility when it comes to what you want to do with them .

And the best is - you don't even need that much to make them!

Here's what I used :

- Wood Logs ( I used Jacaranda wood and aimed for a 10 - 15cm height)

- Masking Tape

- Hole Saw for a Drill

- Clear Varnish - I used Fired Earths velvet wood Gloss Varnish .The varnish you decide to you just check doesn't yellow. But this you can get at a local Builders.

- Flat head screw driver

- Sand paper ( 40 Grit for debarking , and 100 grit for light sanding)

- Rose gold paint Is used is by Bastion Paint - In their special effets Rose Gold colour. You can check their products out here . But I was lucky to find some at my local PNA.

I did run out of this towards the end and had to resort to using some wall paint ( I know cringe) BUT I must say that it actually worked really well . And this paint you can find at your local builders - Its Fired Earths Liquid Metal in Rose Gold. The texture was obviously different but the varnish helped even out the look across all the logs.

Lets Begin :

1) So I wanted to expose the wood grains and textures. I debarked the wood with a flat head screw driver. Now you should actually use a wood scraper but I didn't have this . Alternatively you could get pre-debarked wood logs. But for me this wasn't the case . I had sort of firewood logs.

Depending on the wood you need to be gentle. First begin by dusting off any dirt on the log. The gently find any open spots of the bark from the log and run the flat end of the screw driver down along the grain to remove the bark. It should come off fairly easily.

2) Once all the bark is remove taking a very fine sandpaper gently sand each log. You are looking to not sand down the log itself . But simply to make sure that there are no pieces standing out from the log.

Now you should have a cleaned log. I didn't sand the top of the logs because I liked the rough look at the very top. Also Jacaranda wood is extremely fine so sanding it is not recommended as it'll just disintegrate .

3) Taking a pencil and ruler, measure the center of each of the logs to find where the candle will be placed.

4) Set up your drill and place it where you want to begin drilling and drill your holes very gently.

Once its drilled gently sand the inside of each log so that the candle sits flat. Make sure not to drill too deep or your log might catch a light if you place a candle on the inside.

5) Now I decided to ring a rose gold slice at the bottom, but this is definitely up to you! If you do place masking tape around the log in as straight of a line as possible.

6) Taking your rose gold paint , paint a very fine layer on the wood and leave it to dry.

7) Taking your clear varnish . Make sure its clear and not yellowing or it could turn out slightly differently. Again this is totally up to you. But taking your varnish gently coat the outside of the wood. Leave it to dry completely ( It can take up to 4 hours) . Do this 3 times. The final coat ( your 4th coat) needs to sit for at least 24 hours. This makes sure that it can with stand weather. Because of the type if wood I used I didn't coat the top with varnish . This was also for safety reasons.
